On May 31st, President Joe Biden proclaimed support for the LGBTQI+ community by deeming June 2022 as Pride Month. The month-long celebration dates back to 1970 when the first pride march occurred in New York City. Across the nation, people support the LGBTQI+ community by putting together festivals, marches, and pride-themed events. Phoenixville is honoring Pride Month in a variety of ways.

5th Annual Pride Fest

The LGBT Equality Alliance of Chester County is hosting the 5th annual festival on Saturday, June 11. The festival will feature entertainment from music to drag performances. Everyone is encouraged to attend the event.

The LGBT Equality Alliance of Chester County is headquartered in Phoenixville on Gay Street.

Quizzo with a Queen

If you’re into history and trivia, you can check out Uncle B’s quizzo with a queen. Fanci Dismount Stratton–a comedian and drag queen–will host a factual pride history quizzo from 4:30-6:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 12.

The suggested $10 cover is donated to The Attic Youth Center. The mission of the organization, “is to create opportunities for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Questioning (LGBTQ) youth to develop into healthy, independent, civic-minded adults within a safe and supportive community and to promote the acceptance of LGBTQ youth in society.”

Pride Walk on Bridge Street

The borough council and members of the LGBT Equality Alliance of Chester County organized a crosswalk painting that occurred on the morning of June 5.

The crosswalk–now known as the Pride Walk–is the first of its kind in Chester County. The street was painted to mirror the rainbow, which is a color combination associated with LGBTQI+ equality.

Members of the community came together to paint the crosswalk and write messages in chalk to support pride in Phoenixville.

Borough and Business Support

The pride flag is flying high on the flagpole outside of the borough building on Bridge Street. The borough posted a sentiment of support on its Instagram page at the beginning of June. Phoenixville does everything it can to bring people together, and it’s no surprise that Pride Month gets support from local leaders.

Businesses are showing support by posting support on social media. Be on the lookout for pride-themed events and specials this month!

LGBTQI+ Resources
