The Historic Mansion House Reopens
The iconic building in downtown Phoenixville renowned as “Mansion House” is taking a new form. With a nod to its history, Mansion House 37 is opening as a bar focused on food, drinks, and live music. The announcement happened in early December and future customers are receiving updates on social media. The reopening signifies a new era for the 19th-century building.
The History of Mansion House
If you’re driving over the bridge from Mont Clare, it is one of the first buildings you’ll see. The historic building sits against Bridge Street with its black shutters and bright, red wooden columns.
Local historian and Royersford Councilman Ryan Conroy says the building was constructed in 1830 to be a dry goods store before switching over to be a hotel and tavern. As one of the oldest buildings on Bridge Street the hotel served as a pit stop for former President Chester A. Arthur (1881-1885) during his campaign.
Conroy also states that the Sundance Kid’s sister lived at the hotel. According to biography.com, the Sundance Kid was a famous criminal born in Mont Clare, PA. Sundance’s real name was Harry Alonzo Longabaugh, and he left home as a teenager and headed west. He earned the nickname “Sundance” by stealing a horse in the town of Sundance, Wyoming. After earning his stripes as an outlaw, he became infamous by being a part of Butch Cassidy’s Wild Bunch and committing bank heists and train robberies.
Mansion House has served the public since the 1800s and has used the name for most of its existence. Phoenixville residents may also know this landmark as The Pickering Creek Inn, which closed a few years ago.
The latest iteration of the historic location is now opening as Mansion House 37. The bar is slated to throw a New Year’s Eve party as one of its first live music events.
